Changes to the student visa route for those wishing to study in the UK was announced on 23 May 2023 and will be implemented in January 2024.
These changes come as part of the Government’s plans to reduce net migration, whereby half a million student visas were issued since 2019 and the number of dependants overseas students has increased by 750%.
Under the current provisions, postgraduates can bring their children under 18 and partner to the UK with them whilst studying. Students are also able to switch into work routes from inside the UK.
Effective from January 2024:
- Students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK, except for students of limited postgraduate research courses.
- Students cannot switch into work categories until after their studies have been completed.
- The financial requirements for studying in the UK with a student visa will undergo a review. Specific details regarding the revised financial conditions are to be confirmed.
